So how hard is the Kokoda Trail? This is the usual question in the minds of many individuals and groups who plan to walk the infamous wartime trail in Papua New Guinea.
To answer your question, we’ve got bad and good news for you.
The bad news is – trekking Kokoda is immoderately tough and challenging. You’ve probably read about it or heard from people that it’s no walk in the park and not for the faint-hearted.
But the good news is it’s doable! – if you train hard enough and prepare very well for it.
How to train for Kokoda
You need a very good level of physical fitness and mental toughness to do Kokoda. So put a lot of emphasis and focus on this two very important components of your physical training.
There are many forms of exercises you can include with your training, however, hill and mountain climbing with a reasonably heavy backpack or daypack, if possible, should be at the top of your list. Begin by starting at the bottom and gradually working your way to the top i.e. from steep to steeper climbs.
You can find many places where you can go climbing and this can be within or on the fringes of your suburb, town or city, for e.g. the South Coogee Steps in Sydney or Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk on the Sunshine Coast.
Also work on increasing the intensity of your training as you progress. This will help to build your muscular and cardiovascular strength and invigorate your stamina and endurance.
And always plan your workouts well in advance – and be strategic about it.
How to prepare for Kokoda
Your physical readiness is only just one aspect of your overall preparations for the Kokoda Trail as there are a number of essential things you must do in order to be fully prepared and trek-ready.
You need to know the trek you’ll be going on (to gain an idea of the level of physical intensity), have a fitness plan and begin training right away, see your doctor so you’re fit medically as well (very important), have the right equipment for your trek and everything you need for the trip (if ever in doubt, ask your tour operator).
