Here are links to the main airlines that we fly with here in Australia and in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
We book flights with only reputable airlines for all our international and domestic flights. These airlines are Air Niugini, PNG Air, Qantas, Virgin, and Tiger.
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS ARE OPTIONAL
Our Kokoda treks and PNG tours have optional return flights from Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, and Darwin. You can include international flights when you book your trek online or offline when you send us an enquiry. Otherwise you can arrange your own flights to and from Port Moresby which is the transit point for your trek and tour.
DAILY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS FOR KOKODA TREKS
If you’re an individual trekker or a small trekking party, you’ll fly with either Air Niugini or PNG Air’s scheduled daily domestic flights servicing the Port Moresby – Popondetta route. Popondetta’s Girua Airport is linked by road with Kokoda which is used to get you to Kokoda or Girua Airport depending on where you start and finish your Kokoda trek.
AIR CHARTERS FOR KOKODA TREKS
If you have a relatively large trekking party, we’ll organise charter flights with Tropicair’s DHC-6 Twin Otter or Cessna 208 Grand Caravan between Port Moresby and Kokoda directly. Depending on the size of the group, we may do several sorties to get all passengers and cargo to the destination. In exceptional circumstances like bad weather or air charters being fully booked, we also Girua Airport as our point of embarkation and disembarkation for both large and small trekking parties.
DOMESTIC FLIGHTS ARE INCLUDED IN YOUR TREK / TOUR PACKAGE
Domestic flights in PNG are included in the cost for your trek and tour. For Kokoda treks, if you’re trekking from Kokoda to Owers’ Corner (north to south), you’ll fly from Port Moresby’s Jackson’s Airport to Popondetta’s Girua Airport in a relatively large Dash 8 or ATR-72 aircraft, then travel by road to Kokoda to begin your trek. If you’re trekking from Owers’ Corner to Kokoda (south to north), you’ll do the opposite – i.e. travel by road from Kokoda to Popondetta, then fly from there back to Port Moresby. Domestic flights are also included for tours of Kokoda, Gona – Buna, Tufi, Milne Bay, and Rabaul tours.
Airport transfers included for all international and domestic arrivals and departures in PNG and including reception by a Kokoda Trail Expeditions staff in Port Moresby.
