This Kokoda Track tour has to be on your top of your list of “things to do” when you travel to Papua New Guinea. If you’re not just about seeing the country but learning a thing or two about its history then this tour is for you. It begins with a guided tour of Port Moresby followed by Kokoda, Buna, Gona and Sanananda, on the Northern Beachheads. These areas have history military significance where some of the most fierce battle sites were fought in WW2.

Begin with a round-trip tour of Port Moresby to kick-start your trip. From your hotel, we’ll get you to tour Bomana War Cemetery, the resting place of over 3000 soldiers from WW2, before continuing on to Owers’ Corner via McDonald’s Corner. At Owers; Corner, you’ll be greeted by the grand vista of the towering and rugged Owen Stanley Range, which will help you to appreciate the difficulty of fighting a war in the mountains of PNG. Following Owers’ Corner, we head back to Port Moresby for a look at the city and insights into its role during the conflict. After doing the rounds, we finish off the day at the beautiful Port Moresby Nature Park. The wildlife sanctuary is home to many native, rare and exotic flora and fauna. From there, we get you back to your hotel for the night. The next day, you collect your bags and head for the airport where we catch our plane into Popondetta for the next leg of our tour. In Popondetta, we get you to see Kokoda, a famous battle site during the Kokoda campaign before travelling to Sanananda village, which is where you’ll spend the remainder of your tour. Your tour begins with Sanananda followed by Gona and Buna. These villages on the northern beachheads witnessed some of the fiercest encounters in 1942/43 which claimed the lives of many Allied soldiers. It’s where the Australians, with the help of their American ally, drew first blood with the Japanese following numerous setbacks along the Kokoda Trail.

Port Moresby - Bomana War Cemetery – Owers' Corner – Port Moresby (approx. 8 hours)

After breakfast, we leave our hotels and travel by to  Owers’ Corner, the drop-off point of the Kokoda Trail. Our first stop is Bomana War Cemetery, where we tour the largest war cemetery in the Pacific, and McDonald’s Corner, the original road head of the Kokoda Trail in WW2, where many soldiers setoff for battle for the first time over the Owen Stanley’s.  Owers’ Corner is named after Captain Noel ‘Jerry’ Owers, a surveyor with the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles, who was given impossible the task of surveying a road over the Owen Stanley’s. Australian engineers later cut a road from McDonald’s Corner past Owers’ Corner zigzagging its way down to Goldie River but work stopped when impossibility of the task was realised. After a tour of Owers’ Corner, we travel back to tour Port Moresby via the Sogeri area before stopping at Port Moresby Nature Park to catch a glimpse of PNG’s unique and vast array of flora and fauna. Following the tour, we return to our hotel for the night before our flight to Popondetta the next day.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 2: Port Moresby – Popondetta – Kokoda - Sanananda (approx. 8 hours)

Today, you pack our bags and make our way to the airport for our flight to Popondetta. In Popondetta, we meet our welcoming party before travelling by road to tour Kokoda. The drive takes past Awala, Wairopi, Oivi and Gorari. Awala is where the first shots were fired, marking the start of the Kokoda Campaign, and Wairopi is where Australian forces came in to contact with the advancing Japanese. Oivi and Gorari  were also sites of skirmishes and later the location of a fierce and bloody battle of Oivi-Gorari. Kokoda is the site of the first and second battle of Kokoda. Kokoda was strategically important to the Allies because it had the only airstrip between Port Moresby and northern beachheads of Gona and Buna. After Kokoda, we head down to the coast to Sanananda village which will your home for the tour of the beachheads.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Sanananda - Gona - Sanananda

After breakfast, we begin our tour of the Sanananda, Gona and Buna beachheads. The Battle of the Beachheads at Gona, Buna, and Sanananda, formed the final and bloody chapter in the Papuan Campaign from 1942-43. Exhausted, battle-weary Australians, and inexperienced American troops, began a brutal and a daunting mission to destroy fortified Japanese bunkers and trenches. It wasn’t easy against desperate defenders who were prepared to fight to the death. We begin with a tour of the battle of Sanananda before moving to take a look at the Gona battle site. After the tour, we return to our guesthouse at Sanananda in time for dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Sanananda – Buna – Sanananda (approx. 8 hours)

Today, we’ll take you to tour the Buna battle site. Of the three locations, Buna was main base for the Japanese advance along the Kokoda. After a guided tour of the area, we return once more to Sanananda. Tonight is your last night so we’ve organised with a couple of the village elders to talk to you about their experiences during the war. It’s also an opportunity to present tips and gifts to the locals for their lovely hospitality.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Sanananda - Popondetta – Port Moresby (approx. 8 hours)

Today brings us to the end of your short but historically-fueled and culturally-enriched tour of PNG. You pack your bags, say your goodbye and make your way to the airport for your flight back to Port Moresby. On arrival, we organise your transfer back to your respective hotel to end the tour.
