Kokoda Trail Meals & Rations

Kokoda Trail Expeditions always ensures that there is plenty of food and fresh water for each member of our trekking groups. We use daily rations supplied by OzKokoda Rations of Australia and bring a variety of different food and menu options. We supplement the rations as much as possible with fresh tropical fruits, potatoes, vegetables and pork purchased from local communities during the trek.

All meals are included in trek pricing, including meals during hotel accommodation the day before and after your trek. Note that your hotel meals will include dinner on the eve of your arrival in Port Moresby, breakfast before you leave for the Kokoda Trail, dinner after you have returned from trekking, and breakfast before you catch your flight home. On the trail, porters will carry the food and help prepare the meals, so trekkers are able to wash up, rest up and fully enjoy their meal.

Water

There are various designated water points along the Kokoda Trail where we will get natural mountain water, which is purified using water purification tablets. It is of paramount importance that trekkers drink enough water while trekking the Kokoda Trail. Low fluid levels can result in dehydration, which can be disastrous. Our guides and porters will make sure that there is always ample water for the group and we recommend that all trekkers drink as much as they comfortably can.

All trekkers must bring along a camel/hydration pack or water bottles for use during the expedition and ensure they maintain regular fluid intake. It’s recommended to drink 3 to 5 litres of water for each day of trekking. We suggest and advise our trekkers to purchase a container of Staminade or Gatorade powdered drink to mix with their water to assist with keeping body electrolyte levels up and as a guard against dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Snacks

OzKokoda Rations 24-hour trek rations also include snacks for morning/afternoon tea such as muesli bars and fruit bars. You may also choose to bring along some snacks yourself, such as small packets of nuts, dried fruit, lollies, etc. Although additional food is welcome please remember that you will have to carry whatever you bring, so keep it as light as possible.
