Camping Equipment

We provide an extra backpack, a two-person tents and a ground foam as well as meals, water purifying tablets, cooking equipment and survival gear for your Kokoda Trail expedition. This will be carried by your group porter. You still need to bring along your own backpack with your gear and hire a personal if you think you can't carry it for the the lenght of your trek.

What You Should Bring

  • A 60 or 75 Litre Backpack (One with a daypack attached is ideal for a personal porter)
  • A ground foam/mat
  • Gatorade or Powerade powdered drinks
  • A lightweight sleeping bag / bivvy bag
  • Hydration/camel pack and water bottles
  • Durable plastic garbage bags to keep gear dry
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Good hiking or military boots
  • Metal hiking poles (You have the option to bring along one or two poles)
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Camera and any other personal items
  • Toiletries
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Clothing, including two sets for trekking, one for cold weather and one for sleeping.

We urge you to bring the bare minimum on your trek and to keep the weight of your backpack between 10-12kg.

Please refer to the Planning section of this website for a list of all other items to bring on your trek and things to arrange before you leave.

Group Porters

One group porter will be allocated for every trekker in your group. The porters will each carry around 20kg of weight, including food, tents, and other camping, cooking and survival gear for the group. Your allocated porter can  carry up to 8kg of your gear. Group porters perform the dual role as a guide and porter.

Personal Porters

It is possible to hire a personal porter to carry your backpack if you think you will have problems carrying your own backpack for the duration of your trek. This option costs an additional $500.00 per person or $900.00 if shared between two people. This is a good solution for trekkers that are less fit. If you choose to hire a personal porter, ensure you have backpack with a daypack attached for use by your personal porter during your trek.

Overnight Camps

You will spend some nights at village guesthouses and others at jungle campsites. The porter allocated to you will help you set up your tent at campsites and help arrange your bed for the night at guesthouses. All campsites and guesthouses will have toilets, a fireplace and water for washing and cooking. We will purify water for drinking with water purification tablets.
