Kokoda Trail Expeditions is an Australian-owned trekking operator specializing in military history and community-based ecotourism treks along the historic Kokoda Trail and the Buna, Gona and Sanananda areas of Papua New Guinea. With offices in both Sydney and Port Moresby, the company was founded with a simple mission: to provide safe, affordable and expertly-guided treks that honour the history of this incredible area while also benefiting local communities and preserving the environment for future generations.

Our management team has decades of experience living and working throughout Papua New Guinea and our porters, guides and support staff are among the best in the business. Our goal is to bring the strategic and major battle sites of the Kokoda Campaign and the Battle of the Beachheads at Buna, Gona and Sanananda to life through exciting, safe and challenging treks.

The battles of the Kokoda Campaign and their historical significance cannot be overstated. Our treks are a tribute to the lives lost preserving the freedom, well-being and security of Australians and the bond that was forever forged between Australia and Papua New Guinea on the rugged trail that has become both an enduring symbol and life-changing pilgrimage for so many.

Our Guides & Porters

Our friendly, experienced and extremely knowledgeable Australian and PNG guides and porters know the entire length of the Kokoda Trail including the Buna, Gona and Sanananda sites like the back of their hands and are some of the toughest in the industry. We provide training for all of our employees in First Aid, Communications, Survival Skills, Leadership, Evacuation Skills and Risk Management in addition to putting our local trek leaders and guides into responsible leadership roles so they can be model citizens and effective leaders in their communities.

Our Service

Client safety is our primary concern and all head guides are certified in First Aid, carry VHF hand-held radios and satellite phones for emergencies and are trained in Emergency Preparedness and Risk Management
Our transparent pricing and payment plans are structured to make joining a trek affordable without sacrificing on comfort, safety or support.
Our guides and porters are extremely experienced, knowledgeable and patient. Each of our guides has trekked the Kokoda Trail a minimum of 25 times, with our head guide, Mr. Johnson Ibara, having completed his 72nd trek in July 2010.
We offer a choice of treks and tours to match your fitness, age and interest levels and will assist in your pre-trek training with our free Kokoda Trek Fitness Program course.
All treks are officially registered with the Kokoda Track Authority.

Charitable Giving

Kokoda Trail Expeditions donates funds to the Kokoda Track Foundation to repay the selfless help given by the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels to Australians during the Kokoda Campaign and to ensure the environmental health of the Kokoda Trail region of Papua New Guinea. In an effort to improve the health and medical conditions of the Koiari, Oro Kaivan and Ewage communities along the Kokoda Track we also financially support the work of Save the Children Australia, a charitable organization that helps children in many developing countries including Papua New Guinea.
