Kokoda Trail Expeditions

Safe, Affordable & Eco-Friendly Kokoda Trail Treks in Papua New Guinea

There are few places on the planet as lush, beautiful and wild as the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The Kokoda Trail is a true trekking adventure that winds along vine-choked trails, past raging rivers and through rugged and isolated terrain in the footsteps of Australian military history. Join us on a 9 or 10 day trek with a small group of fellow adventurers led by our expert local or Australian historian guides.

We offer a wide variety of treks and tours with options suitable for all ages, interests and activity levels ranging from short 3 day tours of the beachheads of Buna, Gona and Sanananda to a complete 12 or 13 day trek and tour of the entire battle trail from Owers Corner to Kokoda...truly an epic adventure! Visit our Treks and Tours section for detailed descriptions and more information.

Trek with us this year and celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Kokoda Campaign!

Kokoda Trail treks that honor the past while protecting the future

The Kokoda Trail winds through the wild and untamed wilderness that a small group of young, inexperienced and ill-equipped Australian soldiers bravely and valiantly fought to defend against the advance of the Japanese Army during the Kokoda Campaign of World War II. Every Kokoda Trail trek that we lead is in honour of not only these brave soldiers but the local “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” whose support and knowledge was essential for victory. Our treks and tours directly benefit local communities and we operate under strict eco-sensitive trekking guidelines to maintain the environment of this amazing area for future generations. We’re proud members of the Kokoda Trail Foundation and source our local employees, food and supplies from villages along the trail route. Our expert guides have successfully led celebrities including Russell Crowe, Bridie Carter and Rowan Atkinson on military history treks and client safety is our number one priority. We have an extensive risk management program in place and are a fully insured tour operator registered in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Kokoda Trail is more than just a challenging trek through incredible wilderness; it’s literally a walk in history. Discover the incredible natural wilderness of Papua New Guinea and the fascinating history of the Kokoda Trail on a trek with Kokoda Trail Expeditions. Visit our Booking Page now for more information and special pricing on all treks and tours.

  1. Western Australians, S. Morell and C.Moore completed their nine day Kokoda trek on 24 Mar 2012. It was the greatest thing they've ever done in their lives and are urging all Australians to take up the challenge. They had a ball of a time on the trail and highly commended our staff for their professionalism in guiding and taking care of them."One of the biggest challenges they will have to face but visiting an important place in our history makes it all worth it", said S. Morell when asked if there was one thing he had to tell other Australians about Kokoda and what it would it be. Visit the testimonial page on this website to read more on what they had to say.

  2. We have not had any major dramas with the trek conditions along the Kokoda track during our recent treks except some flooding due to heavy rain and the wet season in March this year. Our transports have been able to move our trekkers between Port Moresby and Owers Corner, and Girua Airport (Popondetta) and Kokoda with no problems at all. The only impediment we may encounter will be the wet crossings along the Popondetta-Kokoda road if it's affected by heavy rain and severe flooding but the weather conditions haven't been too bad since the flooding in the Popondetta area towards the end of 2011 which devastated parts of the province. If crossing is required anywhere along the trek in inclement weather, it will be by some form of a raft constructed by our experienced local guides and porters. This is where their expertise and local knowldege become really handy.

  3. The Queensland family of five that we talked about previously completed their Kokoda Short Tour on a high with us. When they first arrived in Port Moresby on 23 April 2012,they were accommodated for two days at the luxuriuos four star Airways Hotel. On 24 April, they toured areas of military significance along the Sogeri Road from Port Moresby to Owers Corner. They were shown military encampments, hospitals, supply installations, maintenance areas, provost posts, farms and routes where the Kokoda track began. This included a side trip to the Iarowari High School and Sogeri National High School which were the New Guinea Force School of Signals and the 113th Australian Convalscence Depot at the height of the Kokoda Campaign. On 25 April, they attended the ANZAC Day dawn service at the Bomana War Cemetery on the outskirts of Port Moresby before travelling to Popondetta. In Popondetta, they were accommodated in town at Oro Guesthouse and toured Buna, Sanananda and Gona by boat from Oro Bay. They were treated to a tribal chief's  welcome when they returned to Oro Bay by a village dancing group in their beautiful paraphenalia, singing (or sing-sing as commonly refered to in PNG) and a small feast with a traditional taste before returning to Popondetta. On 27 April, they returned to Port Moresby where they spent their remaining hours at the Holiday Inn before catching their connection flights back to Cairns and Brisbane. Their trip was enjoyable, emotional and educational. They got to see the spots where their grandfather and great grandfather fought and died at Buna and Sanananda and are planning on returning there one day during the school holidays.

  6. Our clients have been enjoying their stay at the four star Airways Hotel and Holiday Inn in Port Moresby with all meals and airport transfers included, enroute to Kokoda. They've been having the opportunity to choose between the shared accommodation (two single beds) and buffet meals at Airways Hotel and single accommodation with continental meals at the Holiday Inn. By trekking or touring with us, they got their value for money by being given quality hotel accommodation in Port Moresby before and after thier trek/tour. Port Moresby is not a relatively safe city and you need somewhere safe to stay where you can be comfortable and secure which is one of our main focus for our clients. Other Kokoda tour operators who boasts about the kind of services they provide you will only  put you up in a dodgey motel or lodge in Port Moresby to your disatisfaction.

  7. Our 2013 treks and tours are now available for sale.
